What is a Yacht Stewardess? Roles, Duties, and Skills Explained31 min. read

So, what is a yacht stewardess (or yacht stew)?

At its core, the role covers guest service, housekeeping, and laundry—making sure the interior is run to a high standard. Depending on the yacht, it can also include things like deck work, meal prep, spa treatments, or admin.

But there isn’t just one version of the job.

Your day-to-day will look completely different depending on the size of the yacht, the program, and the crew structure. You could be part of a large interior team as a Junior Stew, running the show as a Chief Stew, or handling everything yourself as a Sole Stew. There are also hybrid roles like Deck Stew, Chef Stew, or more specialised positions depending on your background.

If you’re new to yachting, you’re very unlikely to step straight into a senior role. Most people start as a Junior Stew, usually focused on housekeeping or laundry, where you learn the basics properly and build experience.

That said, it’s still important to understand what the more senior roles involve and what’s expected at each level. It helps you see where you’re heading—and what skills you’ll need to get there.

This guide breaks down the different yacht stew roles so you can understand where you might fit—and what each position involves in real life.

Two practical checklists and a short guide to help make life onboard easier. Join the newsletter and I’ll send them straight to your inbox.

What qualifications do you need to become a yacht stew?

Before looking at the different roles, it’s important to understand what you actually need to get started.

There is some upfront investment involved. At a minimum, you’ll need:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training (BST)
  • ENG1 medical certificate (or equivalent)

These are mandatory for working on yachts.

From there, you can build on your skills with additional training. For interior crew, I recommend:

If you’re serious about working in the interior, structured training makes a big difference. The IAMI GUEST Yacht Hospitality Program covers service, housekeeping, admin, and interior management in a way that actually reflects how things run onboard.

For junior stewardesses, the best place to start is the GUEST Hospitality Introduction Program (often called the Superyachts Interior Course). It gives you a solid foundation before stepping onboard.

Courses like this are offered by training providers such as Seas the Day Training, and are developed by experienced Chief Stews, which means the training is based on how the interior actually runs day to day.

And just to be clear — courses alone won’t get you hired. You still need to show the right attitude, work ethic, and willingness to start in junior roles, usually in housekeeping or laundry.

Yacht stew salary expectations

Salaries in yachting vary depending on the size of the yacht, the program (charter or private), and your level of experience.

As a general guide:

  • Junior Stew: €2,200 – €3,000
  • Second Stew: €2,800 – €4,000
  • Chief Stew: €4,000 – €7,000+
  • Sole Stew: €2,500 – €4,500

On charter yachts, you can also earn tips, which can significantly increase your income during a busy season.

That said, salary shouldn’t be your only focus when starting out.

Most new stews begin in junior roles, usually in housekeeping or laundry, where the priority is learning the job properly and building experience. The stronger your foundation, the easier it is to move up into higher-paying roles.

Salaries are typically tax-free depending on your residency and time spent at sea.

You’ll also see a lot of inflated salary claims online. These ranges are based on what’s currently realistic in the industry.

Single Yacht Stew Roles

In yachting, each single-role position has its own set of clear responsibilities and areas of expertise. Every one of these roles is crucial, playing a big part in making sure everything runs smoothly and guests enjoy a luxurious experience on board.

⭐️ Chief Stew

Head of Department – Interior

Typical salary: €4,000 – €7,000+

This varies depending on the size of the yacht, program (charter or private), and the size of the interior team.

The Chief Stew leads the interior team and is responsible for the overall running of the interior.

On smaller yachts, this may mean managing one or two stews (or a deck/stew), while on larger yachts it involves overseeing a full interior department, often split across service, housekeeping, and laundry.

The role includes interior oversight, crew training, provisioning, and ongoing coordination with the chef, captain, and guests. You’re responsible for maintaining standards, managing the team, and ensuring the guest experience runs smoothly from start to finish.

The Chief Stew is also responsible for guest safety and comfort at sea, including emergency duties and ensuring the interior team is prepared for drills and onboard procedures.

This role is typically found on yachts from around 35m and up, depending on the program and owner expectations. On larger yachts—60m to 100m+—the Chief Stew manages multiple team members and departments, with a strong focus on consistency, discretion, and high-level service.

This role requires strong leadership, organisation, and the ability to manage both people and pressure. Salaries reflect experience, leadership ability, and proven performance.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Team Management & Supervision: Leading the interior crew, creating task schedules, and ensuring all duties—housekeeping, laundry, and service—are carried out to the highest standard.
  • Guest Services: Managing all aspects of guest interaction, including personalised service, meal and bar service, and handling special requests with discretion and professionalism.
  • Interior Administration: Overseeing interior budgets, stock inventories, provisioning, and interior maintenance planning. Often includes managing flower orders, guest preference sheets, and supplier communication.
  • Training & Mentorship: Providing hands-on training, feedback, and support to junior stews, while fostering a positive team dynamic and maintaining high morale.
  • Event & Theme Planning: Organising table settings, themed nights, and special events onboard, coordinating with the chef, deck team, and other departments to ensure smooth execution.
  • Guest Onboarding & Offboarding: Preparing cabins and service areas before guest arrival and coordinating turnarounds post-departure.
  • Cross-Department Coordination: Working closely with the Captain, Chef, Purser (if onboard), and heads of other departments to ensure seamless operations and excellent guest experiences.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership abilities to manage and motivate the team.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail to maintain high standards.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication for both team management and guest interaction.
  • Organizational Skills: Proficiency in managing various administrative tasks and logistics.
  • Adaptability: The ability to handle unexpected situations with grace and efficiency.

Typically, a career path to becoming a Chief Stewardess involves climbing the ranks, starting from junior stewardess roles and gaining experience in various aspects of yacht stewardship. Continuous learning through training courses and certifications in hospitality, management, and service can greatly enhance career prospects.

🛎️ Second Stew/First Service Stew

Second in Command – Interior

Typical salary: €2,800 – €4,000

The Second Stew—often referred to as the First Service Stew—is the Chief Stew’s right hand and plays a key role in delivering a high standard of service onboard.

This position is typically found on yachts with three or more stews, usually from around 40m and up, depending on the program and guest expectations.

The role is heavily service-focused, with responsibility for guest interaction, table settings, bar setup, and ensuring smooth service during meals and events. You’re often the main point of contact for guests during service, setting the tone and maintaining consistency.

In addition to service, the Second Stew may assist with training junior stews, overseeing day-to-day interior tasks, and stepping in to support the Chief Stew where needed. On some yachts, this includes helping manage rotas, checklists, and interior standards.

This role requires confidence in service, strong communication skills, and the ability to take initiative. You’re expected to lead by example and step up when the Chief Stew is unavailable.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Service Support & Leadership (depending on team size):
  • On smaller yachts, rotates service duties with the Chief Stew. On larger yachts, may take the lead in managing service during guest meals and events.
  • Guest Interaction: Acts as a key point of contact during guest service, ensuring comfort, discretion, and attention to preferences.
  • Interior Oversight: Supports the Chief Stew in overseeing daily operations, helping manage task rotations and interior standards.
  • Table Settings & Decor: Assists with planning and setting tablescapes, seasonal decor, and floral arrangements.
  • Inventory Control: Manages or assists with inventory for service items, napkins, linens, bar supplies, and other guest-facing interior items.

  • Daily Communication: Works closely with the Chief Stew, Chef, and other departments to coordinate service times, guest activities, and smooth transitions throughout the day.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Advanced Service Skills: Confident in silver service, table setting, wine pairing, and cocktail preparation, with a focus on guest comfort and consistency.
  • Strong Communication: Able to relay information clearly between interior team, chef, and other departments.
  • Supportive Team Coordination: Assists the Chief Stew in managing junior stews and service flow, with a proactive and calm presence.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Handles unexpected situations or guest requests smoothly and professionally.

  • Training Support: Able to guide junior crew in daily routines and reinforce standards set by the Chief Stew.

🧍‍♀️ Third Stew / Head of Housekeeping / Head of Service

Interior Roles – Junior to Mid-Level

Typical salary: €2,500 – €4,500+
(varies depending on whether this is a junior or specialised lead role)

On yachts with a team of three stews, the Third Stew is usually the most junior member of the interior team. The role is primarily focused on housekeeping and laundry, with occasional assistance during meal service.

Even at this level, a strong understanding of cleaning techniques, fabric care, and attention to detail is essential.

On larger yachts—typically 60m and up—this position can evolve into more specialised roles within the interior team.

  • Head of Housekeeping manages the housekeeping and laundry team, ensuring cabins, guest areas, and crew spaces are maintained to a high standard.
  • Head of Service focuses on guest-facing duties, coordinating table service, bar setup, and overall presentation.

These roles are usually filled by experienced stews who prefer to specialise in a particular department rather than rotate between all interior duties.

Whether working as a junior stew or stepping into a more specialised role, this position requires adaptability, discretion, and consistently high standards in both service and presentation.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Assisting in Service: Supporting the service team during meals, events, and guest activities—this may include table setup, serving, bartending, or helping with themed events.
  • Housekeeping Duties: Maintaining guest cabins, communal guest areas, and the bridge to an impeccable standard, following luxury interior detailing procedures.
  • Laundry Tasks: Washing, ironing, steaming, and folding guest and crew laundry, including the correct handling of delicate, high-end garments and dry-clean-only items.
  • Guest Assistance: Responding to guest requests and helping ensure their comfort throughout their stay onboard.
  • Toiletries & Stock: Monitoring and restocking guest toiletries, amenities, towels, and linens as needed.
  • Turndown Service: Assisting with evening cabin refreshes and maintaining guest privacy and discretion.
  • Team Support: Taking direction from the Second or Chief Stew and assisting with daily interior checklists and rotational duties.
  • Head of Housekeeping (on larger yachts): May take the role of Second Service Stew or Head of Housekeeping, depending on team structure and vessel size.
  • Head of Service (on larger yachts): May lead the service team during guest meals and events, plan tablescapes, assist with wine service, and act as a liaison between guests, the galley, and the Chief Stew.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Adaptability: Comfortable switching between housekeeping, laundry, and service tasks as needed.
  • Basic Service & Housekeeping Knowledge: Familiarity with table settings, guest service etiquette, and luxury cleaning standards.
  • Eagerness to Learn: Open to feedback, takes initiative, and actively learns from more experienced crew.
  • Strong Work Ethic: Reliable, proactive, and committed to maintaining high standards throughout the interior.
  • Attention to Detail: Notices the small things that make a big difference in service and presentation.
  • Team Player Attitude: Works well under direction and supports the smooth running of the interior team.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong ability to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Team Leadership (on larger yachts): When acting as Head of Housekeeping, must be able to delegate, guide junior stews, and maintain consistency in standards.
  • Service Leadership (on larger yachts): Confident directing service flow, coaching junior stews, and maintaining high standards across all meals and guest-facing moments.

🪢 Junior Stew

Entry-level Role – Interior

Typical salary: €2,200 – €3,000

The Junior Stew is the entry-level position in the interior team, and where most people start their yachting career.

As a Junior Stew, you’ll typically be responsible for housekeeping, laundry, or a combination of both, depending on the size of the yacht and crew structure. On larger yachts, these roles may be more defined, while on smaller yachts you’ll likely be doing a bit of everything.

  • On yachts around 40–55m (with 3–4 stews), the most junior stew usually rotates between housekeeping, laundry, and occasional guest service. You’ll be working under the direction of the Chief and Second Stew, following established systems and checklists.
  • On larger yachts—typically 60m and up—Junior Stews may be assigned more specific roles within the team, such as focusing primarily on housekeeping or laundry, with less crossover.

This is where you build the foundation of your career—attention to detail, time management, and learning the standards expected onboard.

🧺 Laundry (Junior Stew responsibilities)

On larger yachts—typically 60m and up—laundry often becomes a full-time position due to the volume of guest clothing, crew uniforms, linens, and towels, especially during busy charters or extended owner trips.

As a Junior Stew, you may be assigned primarily to laundry, working as part of a more structured interior team.

The role involves stain-treating, washing, steaming, pressing, and folding everything from guest clothing to crew uniforms, towels, bedsheets, and table linens. Attention to detail is critical, particularly when handling delicate fabrics or designer garments.

You’ll also be responsible for maintaining the laundry area and machines, keeping everything clean, organised, and running efficiently.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Garment Care: Washing, ironing, steaming, and pressing guest clothing, ensuring appropriate treatment for each fabric.
  • Crew Uniforms: Ensuring all uniforms are washed, ironed, and delivered to the correct cabins in a timely manner.
  • Linens & Towels: Laundering and preparing guest towels, bedding, and spa linens for use or storage.
  • Table Linen Prep: Stain treating, washing, inspecting, and pressing tablecloths and napkins, ensuring they’re guest-ready.
  • Laundry Area Maintenance: Keeping the laundry room clean, machines descaled, and equipment running smoothly.
  • Inventory & Supplies: Monitoring laundry products and restocking as needed.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Fabric Knowledge: Understanding how to care for delicate materials like silk, cashmere, linen, and dry-clean-only items.
  • Attention to Detail: Spotting stains, damage, or wear and tear before returning items to service.
  • Time Management: Working efficiently to complete laundry rotations without delays during guest trips.
  • Organisation: Keeping items sorted, labelled, and delivered to the correct areas or crew members.
  • Product Knowledge: Familiarity with luxury laundry detergents, stain removers, and machine settings.
  • Discretion: Respecting guest privacy when handling personal items.

🧼 Housekeeping (Junior Stew responsibilities)

Housekeeping focuses on keeping guest and crew areas immaculate and guest-ready at all times.

On yachts around 40–55m (with 3–4 stews), this is typically where a Junior Stew will spend most of their time, rotating between housekeeping, laundry, and occasional guest service. You’ll be working under the direction of the Chief and Second Stew, following systems and checklists to keep cabins and guest areas consistently clean and refreshed.

On larger yachts—typically 60m and up—housekeeping becomes more structured. Junior Stews may be part of a dedicated housekeeping team responsible for cabins, dayheads, the bridge, and sometimes the captain’s quarters. These yachts often separate housekeeping and service roles, with less crossover.

Duties include daily cleaning routines, turndowns, linen changes, and restocking guest amenities. This role requires a sharp eye for detail, strong time management, and a clear understanding of how to care for luxury finishes.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Guest Area Cleaning: Cleaning and resetting cabins, dayheads, salons, and guest areas to a luxury standard.
  • Crew Area Upkeep: Maintaining crew mess, crew cabins, and shared interior spaces.
  • Amenity Restocking: Replenishing toiletries, towels, robes, and guest preferences.
  • Turn-Down Service: Assisting with evening turndowns and cabin refreshes.
  • Dusting & Detailing: Polishing fixtures, mirrors, glass, and surfaces, often with specific luxury product care.
  • Support Role (on smaller yachts): Helping in laundry and assisting with meal service or running as needed.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Luxury Cleaning Knowledge: Proper care for marble, wood, leather, mirrors, and other high-end surfaces.
  • Discretion & Professionalism: Entering guest cabins respectfully and maintaining guest privacy.
  • Time Management: Efficiently following checklists to complete tasks without disrupting guest flow.
  • Team Communication: Taking direction from senior stews and coordinating with service and laundry teams.
  • Attention to Detail: Spotting smudges, dust, or out-of-place items that affect the overall presentation.
  • Physical Stamina: Handling long days on your feet, often with repetitive cleaning tasks.

🍽️ Sole Stew

Single Interior Crew Role

Typical salary: €2,500 – €4,500

The Sole Stew is typically found on smaller yachts—usually under 40m—and is fully responsible for managing all interior duties.

This includes guest service, housekeeping, laundry, provisioning, and often basic admin. Depending on the yacht and crew setup, the role may also involve assisting on deck or in the galley.

You’re working independently, without a team, so strong time management and the ability to prioritise tasks are essential. There’s no one to hand things over to—everything falls to you.

On some yachts, the Sole Stew may also support the captain during crossings or quieter periods, taking on additional responsibilities as needed.

This is a demanding role and not typically suited to complete beginners. It’s better suited to stews who already have a solid foundation and are confident working without supervision.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • All-Round Interior Management: Handling all aspects of the interior—guest service, housekeeping, laundry, and occasionally basic cooking or provisioning.
  • Guest Relations: Acting as the main point of contact for guests, ensuring their comfort and anticipating their needs.
  • Cabin Preparation: Preparing and maintaining guest cabins, including turndown service, amenities, and personalised touches.
  • Table Settings & Service: Setting the table, managing service (often solo), and coordinating with the galley or chef.
  • Laundry Duties: Washing, ironing, folding, and caring for guest and crew laundry.
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: Juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, adjusting quickly to changes in schedule, guest preferences, or tasks.
  • Basic Admin or Deck Support (as needed): On some yachts, may assist with basic provisioning, crew logistics, or watchkeeping.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Versatility: Confident in switching between service, housekeeping, laundry, and occasional galley or admin tasks.
  • Exceptional Organisational Skills: Able to manage competing priorities efficiently and stay on top of daily routines.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Communicates clearly and professionally with both guests and crew, often acting as the face of the yacht.
  • Resilience & Stamina: Capable of working long hours solo, with limited support and little room for error.
  • Initiative & Independence: Works proactively without needing constant direction—problem-solves and takes ownership of the interior.
  • Discretion & Professionalism: Maintains guest privacy and keeps a calm, composed presence at all times.
what do yacht stews do on yachts

Dual Roles: Stew + Deck, Galley, Purser, or More

Dual-role stews are true all-rounders, combining interior duties with responsibilities in other departments—such as the deck, galley, engineering, or even admin and logistics in the case of a Chief Stew/Purser.

These roles require adaptability, confidence, and excellent time management. They’re not usually suited to green crew, as they demand a solid understanding of interior expectations and the additional responsibilities taken on outside the interior.

🛟 Deck Stew

Dual Role – Interior & Deck

Typical salary: €2,500 – €3,500

This varies depending on how responsibilities are split between deck and interior. On smaller yachts, you may be expected to handle both equally.

The Deck Stew role combines traditional stewardess duties with hands-on deck work. Most common on yachts under 50m, this position supports both the interior—housekeeping, laundry, and guest service—and the deck team, assisting with washdowns, line handling, fenders, and guest activities.

You may work closely with the Bosun, deckhands, or Captain on deck, as well as alongside a Chef or Cook Stew on the interior, with duties shared depending on the setup.

On smaller yachts, it’s common for crew to overlap roles, with team members stepping in where needed—especially during guest service or busy periods.

This is a physically demanding role. You’ll be working outdoors in the sun, handling equipment, and assisting with deck operations, so a good level of fitness and strength is important. Captains will often look for candidates who appear capable of handling the physical side of the job.

This role suits crew who enjoy variety and don’t mind switching between interior and deck tasks throughout the day.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Interior Duties: Assisting with housekeeping, laundry, and service.
  • Exterior Maintenance: Helping with washdowns, window cleaning, stainless polishing, and setting up deck furniture.
  • Guest Support: Assisting with water toys, beach setups, and general guest activities on deck.
  • Meal Service Support: Helping serve meals and drinks during guest trips—often with additional support from the Captain, Engineer, or Bosun.
  • Mooring & Tender Operations: Handling lines, fenders, and occasionally assisting with launching or receiving tenders.
  • Flexible Crew Support: Willingly stepping in wherever needed, depending on the day’s priorities and guest flow
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Adaptability: Comfortable switching between interior service and physically demanding deck work.
  • Team Coordination: Works closely with both interior and deck departments, often reporting to multiple HODs.
  • Guest-Facing Confidence: Polished, presentable, and professional while assisting guests both inside and on deck.
  • Physical Fitness & Strength: Able to manage long days on your feet, lifting gear, and outdoor conditions.
  • Detail-Oriented Mindset: Maintains high standards whether cleaning cabins or prepping the sundeck.
  • Time Management: Manages task lists efficiently and stays on top of fast-moving transitions during guest trips.

👩‍🍳 Chef / Cook Stew

Dual Role – Interior & Galley

Typical salary: €3,000 – €5,000

This role usually comes with higher pay due to the added responsibility of meal preparation alongside interior duties.

The Chef Stew (or Cook Stew) is responsible for both preparing meals and managing day-to-day stewardess duties. Most common on yachts under 40m, this role requires strong time management, self-motivation, and the ability to switch between the galley and interior throughout the day.

The difference between a Chef Stew and a Cook Stew usually comes down to experience and training. A Chef Stew will typically have more formal culinary training or professional galley experience, while a Cook Stew may be more self-taught or cooking simpler, family-style meals. The expectations onboard will vary depending on the owner, guests, and program.

In a two-stew setup (for example, Chef Stew + Deck Stew), interior duties like housekeeping, laundry, and service are shared, while the Chef Stew or Cook Stew takes full responsibility for the galley and all meal preparation.

You’ll be planning menus, provisioning, preparing meals, and often catering to dietary requirements or preferences—while still keeping on top of interior tasks.

This is a demanding role, especially during busy periods or guest trips, and it’s not typically suited to complete beginners. A good level of confidence in the galley, along with the ability to stay organised under pressure, is essential.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Meal Preparation: Planning and preparing all guest and crew meals, including dietary-specific menus and themed dinners.
  • Galley Management: Keeping the galley clean, organised, and compliant with hygiene standards; managing appliances and cookware.
  • Provisioning & Stock Management: Sourcing fresh ingredients and keeping track of food, snacks, and interior stock levels.
  • Interior Support: Assisting with or overseeing guest service, table settings, laundry, and light housekeeping as needed.
  • Service Coordination: Timing meal prep with service, often plating and serving solo or with help from the Deck Stew or other crew.
  • Guest Interaction: Communicating directly with guests to understand preferences, allergies, and dining expectations.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Culinary Skills: Confident in a range of cuisines, dietary requirements, and creative meal presentation—even in small galleys.
  • Time Management: Balancing cooking with interior responsibilities efficiently, especially during guest trips.
  • Multitasking Ability: Switching between galley prep, laundry, and service without compromising quality in any area.
  • Interior Knowledge: Familiarity with laundry care, housekeeping standards, and table settings for various meals.
  • Organisation: Keeping both the galley and interior routines running smoothly with limited support.
  • Stamina & Resilience: Long days and back-to-back duties require physical and mental endurance.

👩‍💼 Chief Stew Purser

Interior Leadership & Administration

Typical salary: €5,000 – €8,000+

This hybrid role combines the guest-facing leadership of the Chief Stew with the behind-the-scenes administrative and financial responsibilities of a Purser.

Most commonly found on yachts between 45m and 65m, the Chief Stew/Purser is responsible for running the interior while also handling tasks such as budgeting, accounts, crew logistics, expense tracking, and port paperwork.

This position requires strong multitasking skills, professionalism, and excellent time management—often moving from guest service straight into admin and financial tasks within the same day.

Experience as a Chief Stew is usually expected before stepping into this role. A solid understanding of admin and financial processes is essential, along with familiarity with yacht management systems such as Voly, which are commonly used onboard for accounting and operational management.

This is a high-responsibility role suited to experienced crew who are confident managing both people and processes, and who are comfortable working with sensitive information.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Interior Leadership: Managing the interior team, assigning tasks, overseeing service and housekeeping standards, and ensuring guest satisfaction.
  • Guest Services: Leading all aspects of guest experience onboard, from meal and bar service to themed events and personal requests.

  • Crew Logistics: Organising crew flights, visas, contracts, medicals, and liaising with agencies when necessary.
  • Port & Customs Coordination: Handling port clearance, customs paperwork, agent communication, and document preparation during guest trips or crossings.
  • Provisioning Oversight: Coordinating with the Chef and department heads for provisioning and ensuring accurate inventories are maintained.
  • Liaison Role: Acting as the key link between guests, the Captain, and other departments—often managing preference sheets and guest schedules.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Advanced Organisation: Able to juggle crew paperwork, financial reporting, and guest logistics without dropping the ball.
  • Discretion & Professionalism: Handles sensitive information, guest preferences, and crew issues with complete confidentiality.
  • Leadership & Team Management: Leads the interior team while mentoring junior crew and maintaining a calm, composed presence.

  • Financial Literacy: Comfortable with expense tracking, spreadsheets, and reporting tools used for yacht accounting.

Specialized & Niche Yacht Stew Roles

Some yachts go beyond the standard stew setup—these roles combine core interior duties with additional qualifications or experience in wellness, childcare, tech, or media. Whether you’re trained as a masseuse, fitness instructor, nurse, nanny, engineer, or even skilled in social media or AV support, these hybrid positions bring extra value and flexibility to the crew dynamic.

These roles are often seen on yachts with highly personalised programs, wellness-focused charters, family setups, or tech-forward owners who expect more than the usual stew experience.

Specialised Dual Role – Interior & Medical

Salaries vary significantly depending on your medical qualifications, experience, and how the role is structured onboard.

The Nurse Stew is a hybrid role combining stewardess duties with professional medical care. This position is typically found on larger yachts, private family programs, or world-traveling vessels, where a higher level of medical support is required onboard.

This is a specialised role suited to crew with both medical training and experience in hospitality or service environments.

  • Medical Support: Providing first aid, responding to medical emergencies, and assisting in any health-related concerns onboard.
  • Health Monitoring: Checking in regularly with guests or crew who have ongoing medical conditions or specific health needs.
  • Medication Management: Safely storing, administering, and documenting medications or treatments as needed.

Typical salary: €3,000 – €5,500+

Specialised skills can increase your salary, especially on charter yachts where these services add value to the guest experience.

The Fitness Instructor Stew combines traditional stewardess duties with delivering fitness and wellness sessions onboard. This role is most commonly found on larger private yachts or wellness-focused charters, where owners and guests prioritise maintaining their routine while onboard.

In addition to standard interior duties, you may be expected to run personal training sessions, stretching, mobility work, or light group classes, depending on guest preferences.

In some cases, the role may also include basic nutritional guidance or meal input, if you’re qualified, working alongside the Chef to support owner and guest goals.

On many yachts, interior duties will still take priority, with fitness sessions fitted around the owner and guest schedule.

This role requires recognised fitness qualifications, confidence working with guests, and the ability to adapt sessions to different fitness levels and environments onboard.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Fitness Instruction: Leading personal training sessions, yoga or pilates classes, and guest-requested workouts.
  • Wellness Programming: Creating tailored wellness routines based on guest needs, from mobility and meditation to strength training and diet.

This is a highly guest-facing role that requires discretion, professionalism, and recognised training in your area of expertise.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Spa & Beauty Services: Offering professional treatments such as facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, or hair services.
  • Wellness Scheduling: Coordinating treatment times with the Chief Stew and managing bookings discreetly.
  • Interior Duties: Standard stew tasks like guest service, cabin resets, turndowns, or laundry.
  • Spa Setup & Cleanliness: Maintaining the spa or massage area to high hygiene standards and ensuring a calming guest experience.

🧸 Nanny Stew

Specialised Dual Role – Interior & Childcare

Typical salary: €3,000 – €5,000+

The Nanny Stew combines interior duties with professional childcare responsibilities. This role is most commonly found on private family yachts, where guests travel with children and require someone experienced, trustworthy, and confident managing their care onboard.

In addition to standard stewardess duties, you’ll be responsible for planning activities, supervising water play, assisting with routines such as meals, naps, and bedtime, and ensuring a safe and engaging environment for children.

This role requires strong time management, patience, and flexibility, as you’ll often move between childcare and interior tasks depending on the day’s schedule.

On some yachts, childcare will take priority over interior duties when children are onboard.

Previous childcare experience is usually expected, particularly with young children, along with the ability to remain calm and professional in a guest-facing environment.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Childcare Duties: Supervising, entertaining, and caring for children onboard, both in structured and casual settings.
  • Activity Planning: Organising age-appropriate activities, crafts, games, and excursions.
  • Safety Supervision: Ensuring the children’s safety during play, mealtimes, swim sessions, and tender rides.
  • Routine Support: Assisting with routines such as mealtimes, naptime, and bedtime, adapting to each family’s preferences.
  • Interior Support: Contributing to laundry, housekeeping, or service duties when not actively on nanny duty.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Professional Childcare Experience: Background in nannying, teaching, early childhood education, or a related field.
  • First Aid & CPR Certification: Up-to-date emergency training, especially paediatric-focused.
  • Patience & Creativity: A calm and confident approach with the ability to keep children engaged and happy.
  • Discretion: Respects family dynamics and maintains boundaries and professionalism at all times.
  • Adaptability: Flexible and able to adjust to changing family needs, schedules, and locations.
  • Excellent Communication: Keeps clear, respectful communication with parents and other crew.

🔧 Engineer Stew

Specialised Dual Role – Interior & Technical Support

Typical salary: €3,000 – €5,000+

The Engineer Stew is a hybrid position most commonly found on smaller yachts (typically under 35–40m), where crew are expected to take on multiple roles.

This role combines basic technical and mechanical responsibilities with standard stewardess duties such as housekeeping, laundry, and service.

While not responsible for complex engineering systems, the Engineer Stew supports day-to-day operations by assisting with routine checks, minor maintenance, troubleshooting, and general upkeep, particularly during crossings or when issues arise.

To carry out the engineering side of the role, some level of technical training is required. This may include entry-level qualifications such as AEC 1 and AEC 2 (Approved Engine Course) or relevant hands-on experience.

This position requires a practical, hands-on approach to problem solving, along with the ability to stay calm under pressure and switch between technical and interior tasks as needed.

This is not a typical entry-level role and is better suited to crew with some technical background or training.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Technical Support: Assisting with daily checks, engine room rounds, and basic maintenance or repairs.
  • Equipment Monitoring: Keeping an eye on systems like watermakers, A/C units, and generators—reporting issues early.
  • Interior Support: Contributing to service, laundry, or housekeeping duties as part of the interior team.
  • Safety Compliance: Supporting the Captain with drills, safety equipment checks, and log entries.
  • Inventory Assistance: Helping monitor and reorder technical supplies and spare parts as needed.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of basic yacht engineering, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment.
  • AEC 1 & AEC 2 Certification: Minimum required courses for basic engineering responsibilities.
  • Problem-Solving: Able to troubleshoot under pressure and take initiative when systems need attention.
  • Time Management: Balances technical checks and maintenance with interior tasks efficiently.
  • Physical Resilience: Comfortable working in engine spaces and managing physically demanding duties.
  • Discretion & Professionalism: Maintains guest-facing standards even when stepping out of the bilge and into service.

📸 Social Media Manager Stew

Specialised Dual Role – Interior & Content Creation

Typical salary: €2,800 – €4,500+
(varies widely depending on experience and scope of the role)

The Social Media Manager Stew is a newer, specialised role that combines traditional stewardess duties with managing content for the yacht’s or owner’s social media presence.

This role is most commonly found on charter yachts or owner programs where there is a focus on marketing, branding, or documenting the guest experience.

In addition to interior responsibilities, you may be responsible for capturing photos and videos, editing content, posting to social media platforms, and maintaining a consistent visual style that aligns with the yacht or brand.

This role requires strong photography and content creation skills, along with an understanding of social media platforms and trends.

In most cases, this is not a standalone position. It’s usually an additional responsibility given to a stew who already has strong interior skills.

Interior duties will always come first, with content creation fitted around the daily schedule.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Content Creation: Capturing and editing photos/videos of the yacht, destinations, service moments, and lifestyle imagery.
  • Social Media Management: Posting on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok with approved branding and tone.
  • Coordination: Liaising with the Captain, Chef, or owner for content opportunities and approvals.
  • Interior Support: Rotating through stew duties such as service, housekeeping, or laundry during non-content hours.
  • Brand Awareness: Supporting the yacht’s reputation and visibility online in a polished, respectful way.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Photography & Editing Skills: Confident using a camera or phone to capture content, plus editing tools like Lightroom or CapCut.
  • Understanding of Social Media Platforms: Knowledge of content trends, platform features, and engagement tactics.
  • Discretion & Boundaries: Fully respectful of guest privacy—only posts what’s approved.
  • Writing Skills: Clear, engaging captions that reflect the yacht’s image.
  • Time Management: Balances media tasks with stew responsibilities efficiently.
Chef/Deck/Stew, triple duties onboard smaller yachts.

Combined Roles on Smaller Yachts

Don’t be fooled by the size of the yacht—smaller vessels often require the most from their crew. With fewer people onboard, each crew member takes on more responsibility across multiple departments. These combined roles are not recommended for green crew, as they require experience, initiative, and a strong working knowledge of interior, galley, and deck duties.

You’ll often see this setup in couples’ roles, where two experienced crew manage the entire operation from top to bottom.

🧑‍🍳⚓🧼 Cook Deck Stew

Triple Role – Galley, Interior & Deck

Typical salary: €3,000 – €5,500+
(can be lower on smaller private yachts)

This is a demanding all-rounder position where one crew member is responsible for cooking, interior duties, and deck work.

Most commonly found on motor yachts under 30m and sailing yachts under 27m, this role requires excellent time management, flexibility, and a hands-on approach to all areas of the yacht.

You’ll be preparing meals, handling housekeeping and laundry, assisting with service, and supporting deck operations such as washdowns, lines, and guest activities—often all within the same day.

Deck duties are typically shared with the Captain/Engineer, working closely together to manage the exterior and ensure smooth day-to-day operations.

This role is frequently part of a couples’ position, where the partner works as Captain/Engineer. It’s a setup that suits smaller yachts, where space is limited and the crew needs to be self-sufficient.

This is not a typical entry-level role. It’s best suited to experienced crew who are confident working across multiple departments and managing their time under pressure.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Meal Preparation: Planning, provisioning, cooking, and plating meals for guests and crew—often with diverse dietary preferences.
  • Deckhand Duties: Assisting with washdowns, docking, fender work, anchor ops, and guest activities like tender runs and beach setups.
  • Interior Management: Handling service, laundry, housekeeping, and cabin presentation—often solo.
  • Guest Experience: Ensuring guests are well-fed, well cared for, and enjoying a seamless experience from morning to night.
  • Safety Awareness: Supporting deck operations and ensuring safety during all guest and crew activities.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Culinary Confidence: Ability to cook fresh, varied meals in a compact galley with limited provisioning options.
  • Time Management: Efficiently balancing tasks across multiple departments without compromising quality.
  • Adaptability: Switching between roles (and uniforms) as needed—often at short notice.
  • Stamina & Resilience: Managing long days and a demanding workload with limited downtime.
  • Organisational Skills: Keeping inventory, routines, and spaces tidy and efficient across galley, deck, and interior.
  • Professionalism: Maintaining high standards, even when doing three jobs at once.

Advanced Career – Beyond Yacht Stewardess

If you’re looking to move beyond guest service and day-to-day stew duties, roles like the Purser or Interior Manager offer a step into high-level operations. These positions often involve administration, logistics, and leadership—and are commonly filled by experienced Chief Stews or those with business or hospitality management backgrounds.

📋 Purser

Head of Administration – Interior

Typical salary: €6,000 – €10,000+

The Purser is responsible for managing the financial, administrative, and logistical operations onboard, typically on yachts 65m and up.

This is a non-service role, focused entirely on behind-the-scenes operations. Responsibilities often include accounts, budgeting, payroll, crew logistics, itinerary planning, port formalities, and liaising with management companies and the owner’s office.

The Purser works closely with the Captain, Chief Stew, and other heads of department to ensure the yacht runs smoothly from an operational and financial perspective.

This is a senior position that requires a high level of discretion, organisation, and attention to detail, particularly when handling sensitive financial and personal information.

On some yachts—especially under 70m—this role may be combined with the Chief Stew position. On larger yachts, it is usually a dedicated role, separate from the interior.

This position is best suited to experienced crew with a strong background in administration, finance, hospitality management, or previous experience as a Chief Stew.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Accounting and Budgeting: Managing onboard finances, guest and crew accounts, and expense tracking.
  • Crew Administration: Handling crew contracts, flights, medicals, visas, and payroll coordination.
  • Logistics and Port Clearances: Organising berthing, customs documentation, agent communication, and clearance procedures.
  • Inventory Oversight: Keeping track of provisions, uniform, office supplies, and owner or charter-related items.
  • Guest Logistics: Coordinating guest itineraries, transfers, and any administrative guest preferences.
  • Support to Chief Stew: Collaborating on high-level planning and helping manage overall interior admin.
Skills and Career Path:
  • Financial Literacy: Strong understanding of accounting principles and budget management.
  • Discretion and Professionalism: Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
  • Organisational Skills: High-level administrative competence and attention to fine details.
  • Communication Skills: Professional interaction with management, agents, owners, and crew.
  • Problem-Solving: The ability to resolve logistical or administrative issues quickly and calmly.

Many Pursers begin their careers in the interior department, often progressing from Chief Stew roles. Others may come from land-based hospitality or business admin backgrounds. Pursers with experience are in high demand, particularly on large yachts with busy guest schedules or complex itineraries.

Where should you start as a yacht stew?

If you’re new to yachting, you’re very unlikely to step straight into a senior or specialised role.

Most people start as a Junior Stew, usually in housekeeping or laundry, where you learn the basics properly and build experience.

This is where a lot of people get it wrong.

They focus on the “end goal” roles—Chief Stew, Deck Stew, Chef Stew, or something more specialised—without understanding that those positions require solid foundations, confidence, and proven experience onboard.

The reality is, how you perform as a Junior Stew matters. This is where you develop your attention to detail, your work ethic, and your ability to work as part of a team. These are the things captains and Chief Stews are actually looking for.

Once you’ve built that foundation, you can start moving into more defined roles—whether that’s service, deck, the galley, or a specialised position that suits your background.

If you already have transferable skills (hospitality, fitness, childcare, medical, or admin), you may be able to step into a dual or specialised role sooner—but you’ll still be expected to handle core stewardess duties to a high standard.

There’s no shortcut here. But there is a clear path.

If you’re not sure where you fit or how to position yourself, that’s exactly what I help with in my mentorship sessions.
